A US M1852 naval presentation sword belonging to Lt. John Worden, Commander of the USS Monitor was the top lot of Cowan’s first major Historic Firearms and Militaria auction of 2017. The 29″ sword, which was beautifully engraved with dolphin head quillon and acanthus leaf decorations, and featured a pommel cast with a droop-winged American eagle surrounded by 13 stars, sold for $27,025. The lot received an overwhelming amount of interest securing three absentee bids above the low estimate of $10,000 and drawing 11 phone bidders.
A group of factory engraved Marlins made up three of the Top 5 lots for the auction including the second highest sale price of the day, a factory engraved Model 1897, which sold for $25,850. Other Marlin highlights include a factory engraved and gold inlay by Alden George Ulrich Model 28 trap take down shotgun that sold for $15,275; and a factory engraved Model 1891 third variation rifle for $13,513.
