William Gale & Son Three-Piece Sterling Tea Set

American, 1862. A three-piece sterling tea set by William Gale & Son consisting of a teapot with hinged lid and bone spacers, a two-handled covered sugar bowl in urn form, and a covered creamer with hinged lid. Each decorated with sphinxes on each handle, classical faces at the base of the handles, and bearded figures on the spouts, the shoulders adorned with a band of hearts below beaded bands, all with bell flower finials. Each marked W. GALE & SON / NEW YORK / 925 STERLING / [hallmark with 1862 date] / 18 on underside; (tallest) ht. 11.25, wd. 9.25, dp. 6.5 in., total silver wt. 74.920ozt (2330.272g).


Shallow dimples on shoulder of each, most evident on creamer, finial on sugar bowl slightly crooked.
