.54 caliber. 33" barrel secured by two spring retained barrel bands. no S/N. Browned barrel, color casehardened lock and hammer, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked in two horizontal lines forward of the hammer "E. WHITNEY / US" and in two vertical lines behind the hammer "N. HAVEN 1850". Breech plug tang with matching "1850" date. Upper left breech inspected in three lines "US / SM / VP" with the lower left flat marked "STEEL". Counterpane of stock with script "GW" sub-inspection cartouche followed by a script "WAT" final inspection cartouche. Rifle retains its original fixed notch rear sight, brass blade front sight, both sling swivels and a full-length brass tipped steel ramrod. A spare percussion nipple is in its storage location the patchbox. The rifle is accompanied by a period white buff leather sling with a partially visible "NEWARK, NJ" maker's mark and a crisp ordnance inspector's acceptance stamp. A very nice example of an unaltered Mississippi Rifle by the most prolific of the contract makers of these rifles.
Fine. Retains nice even coverage of thinned brown on the barrel which has mixed with a pleasant plum patina making the barrel appear to have even more original finish than it does. Lock and hammer with traces of case color and a rich plum brown patina. Brass furniture with a mostly rich mustard patina with some green verdigris around the edges. Screws, trigger and barrel band springs all retain some blued finish. Stock shows some wear, minor rounding to the sharp edges of the counterpane and scattered bumps, dings and mars.
