.69 caliber, 42" barrel secured by three flat bands with springs, no S/N. Bright finish, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked US / E. WHITNEY in two lines below the pan and NEW / HAVEN / 1837 in three vertical lines at the tail. Lock remains in original flint configuration with the matching assembly mark 0 on internal and external parts, including the pan and top jaw. Barrel with matching 1837 date on tang and marked at breech US / JM / P. Barrel appears to be in original flint as well. No legible cartouches on stock. Retains both sling swivels and includes a reproduction button head ramrod that is a couple of inches short of full length. Whitney received a contract in August of 1822 to deliver 15,000 US flintlock muskets of the current pattern. These were all delivered after his death in 1825, with deliveries beginning in 1826. These muskets were credited to the account of Whitney's nephews Philo and Eli Whitney Blake who operated his armory until Whitney's son reached his majority and took over the facility. A solid, if well used, example of a late production US Model 1828 (1816 Type III) musket in original flint from the famous Whitney manufactory.
Good. Metal lightly cleaned with a dull pewter patina, showing even light pitting over most of the barrel and furniture with some areas of more moderate pitting. Some minor mars are present at the breech as well. Lock markings remain very crisp, barrel markings weaker. Lock fully functional, bore good, lightly oxidized and dirty. Stock sanded and refinished, leaving only smeared outlines of cartouches. Stock shows scattered handling marks, some slivering and chipping along the ramrod channel, as well as around the tang. A 8.5" long tight grain crack on the reverse of the butt. A tiny grain crack is also present at the rear lock screw, running to the barrel channel.
