First published by Edward Elder Cooper on July 14, 1888, The Indianapolis Freeman was the first illustrated African American newspaper in the United States. This issue contains a front page photo captioned, “Booker T. Washington / Who recently received the degree of A.M. at Harvard University,” accompanied by a detailed report of Washington and his academic achievements to date.
