War of 1812 Naval Officer John Rodgers, Manuscript Letter Signed

John Rodgers (1772-1838). 1p, Navy Comm. Office, 14 October 1836. Integral leaf, free franked. To Nash Segrand, Norfolk. "On the 30th Sept your requisition for $3000 for "completing the Hospital" was inadvertently approved by the Commissioners." He then goes on to explain that after expenses have been paid, there was only $990 left, not enough for his hospital, and that "...belongs to other Hospitals - and you will retain it in your hands till further instructions from this Board."

Rodgers served for nearly 40 years, from 1798 - 1837, during the formative period of the US Navy. He served in the Quasi-War with France, the Barbary Wars and War of 1812. He later was instrumental in developing standards and customs for the Navy.
