Bill Bartman (1946-2005) was a colorful, mercurial, one-legged force of life with a love of art, art education, emerging artists and with a soft spot particularly for ceramics. A portrait of Bartman by Frey is alongside. The Brooklyn Rail ran his obit which was signed by a diverse group: Chuck Close, Dorothea Rockburne, Jeffery Sturges, Merill Wagner, Eyal Danieli, and Amanda Guest. Aside from initiating early art-in-schools and theater-in-penitentiaries programs while in Los Angeles, he also founded Art Resources Transfer in 1987, then moved to New York where it continued as a non-profit bookstore gallery that published 16 artist-interview books and presented over 60 exhibitions and has donated more than 140,000 art books, videos and other art and culture-related materials to thousands of rural and inner city libraries nationwide.
