Albumen photograph, 5.75 x 8 in., mounted on slightly larger cream board, with French title identifying the gunboat as the Kearsarge anchored in the Mississippi River channel. Uncredited, but assumed to have been taken by George Mugnier: New Orleans, LA, n.d., ca 1880s.
Although identified as the USS Kearsarge, the identity of the boat is unknown, but it is almost certainly a gunboat built in 1863. Analysis of the ship's stern shape, gun port count, and channel gaps indicates that it might be the USS Kansas, Nipsic, or Nyack.
Our sincere thanks to Robert Jensen for his detailed analysis of the ship featured in the photograph.
