US Marked Colt Richards Conversion Revolver

.44 Colt caliber, 8" barrel, S/N 683. Blued and color case hardened finish, brass triggerguard and gripstrap, one-piece walnut grip. One-line New York barrel address, very weak two-line COLT'S PATENT mark on frame without the later two-line 1871 and 1872 patent date markings. Mixed original percussion serial numbers as is typical of these martial cartridge conversion revolvers, with the conversion number 683 added on most parts and on the conversion breech piece and loading gate. US stamp present on left of barrel, forward and above wedge with a small "A" inspection above and to the rear of the wedge, as well as on the triggerguard and double-stamped on the cylinder along with a small "P." Grip with weak cartouche on left side. Correct first model Richard frame with rear of frame overlapping the cylinder.

Good. Retains no finish with the metal aggressively cleaned and some chemically added patina giving the gun a somewhat mottled gray and brown appearance. Markings range from mostly clear to very weak in some areas. The "US" and "A" inspection on the barrel appear unnaturally crisp for the balance of the gun. Cylinder scene partially visible. Mechanically functional, fair bore with evenly distributed moderate pitting. Grip replaced with an original Colt grip that does not fit well and has had the serial number removed from the backstrap groove. A good entry level example of Colt Richards conversion revolver that appears to have been altered for the US military.
