US Civil War Battle Rattle

"Battle rattles" were noisemakers mostly used by smaller Navy vessels to alert sailors of a boarding attempt or other emergency. This rattle, although it appears the appropriate age, is of much cruder construction than most Civil War-era Navy examples we have seen, leading us to believe it may have been used by a private ship, or possibly made in the field by a member of a volunteer army unit. Rattle measures 11" x 18".
