Unusual Pair of Daguerreotypes Featuring a Soldier and Postmortem View of his Daughter

Lot of 3, comprised of a quarter plate daguerreotype of an officer, likely a lieutenant in the Pay Department, seated in a studio setting with his Model 1860 Staff and Field Officers' sword in hand. The subject's cheeks are lightly tinted pink and his uniform buttons, shoulder boards, belt buckle, and ring as well as elements of his sword are highlighted in gold. A red officer's sash hangs from his belt. Housed under mat stamped "Anson" in full leather case. A sixth plate, lightly hand-colored postmortem daguerreotype of an emaciated young girl at rest, with a doll placed in her arms, housed in a full pressed paper case is also included.

Accompanied by a period, manuscript note signed "Dwight," written from Yonkers, dated June 26, and addressed to "My Dear Aunt." The content is personal in nature and refers to something or someone that is sickly. A large lock of hair is enclosed with the letter. A modern penciled transcription of the letter also included with the lot indicates that "Dwight" is the officer pictured in the quarter plate daguerreotype, adding that his full name is Dwight W. Horton. However, no further information has been uncovered regarding an officer by this name. The images and letter were acquired together from a family in Lansing, MI, and it is believed that the young girl pictured in the postmortem daguerreotype is related to the officer presented in the accompanying image, and may possibly be his daughter.

An interesting grouping, worthy of additional research.

Condition:

Quarter plate of officer with some light spots, tarnish ring, spotting on mat, surface wear to case. Sixth pate daguerreotype is a bit dark, with somewhat dull contrast, small spot on plate, light tarnish along perimeter where plate meets mat.
