Unusual Early 18th Century Flintlock Pistol by S. Newton

Round 8" barrel with top flat indistinctly signed "Nottingham", with early viewed and proved marks. Convex lock with border engraving, swan neck cock, unbridled frizzen with border engraving en suite with lock. Figured walnut full stock carved behind barrel tang with shell. Brass mounts of early form with early 18th century brass side plate cast and chased with foliage, triggerguard with strawberry leaf engraving, short spurred butt cap with strawberry leaf adorning raised pommel. Brass thumb piece affixed with screws, ramrod pipes, rear engraved en suite with lock and frizzen. The form of this pistol is most unusual and very attractive.

Provenance:From the collection of Peter Wainwright Jr.

Condition of barrel smooth brown patina with wear to "Nottingham." Lock with smooth brown patina as well. All small parts appear to be original to the piece. Brass mounts are in good condition throughout. Full stock in relatively good condition with ancient repair to forend just ahead of front ramrod pipe. Oak ramrod a replacement. Action is good.
