After Garvey's death in 1940, the UNIA commissioner for the State of Ohio, James R. Stewart, was elected the president-general. He moved the UNIA Parent Body headquarters to Cleveland and revived the publication of The New Negro World. The publication, which ran until 1944, regularly denounced Jim Crow persecution and colonialism in Africa, it was one of the few militant black newspapers published at the time.
