Umarked U.S. Model 1816 Type III Flintlock Musket

.69 caliber, 42" barrel retained by three flat bands with springs, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Lock unmarked externally, but marked AW on the interior, suggesting Asa Waters. No legible date on the tang due to pitting, with US arsenal style P / {eagle head} / V proof marks on breech. No cartouche is visible on the counterpane. Lock remains in original flint configuration, with a crudely refaced steel (frizzen). Barrel appears to be in original flint configuration as well, with internal camera inspection not revealing any welding or bushing. Retains the lower sling swivel and an original full-length ramrod. Likely a musket made up from available parts by a contractor like Waters to fulfill a state contract during the 1830s.

Provenance:JM returned to SA 5/3/19

Condition:

Good. Metal moderately oxidized with light to moderate pitting, particularly at the breech. Markings on lock clear, weaker on barrel. Lock fully functional, bore heavily oxidized and moderately pitted. Stock shows wear and scattered bumps and dings with a small grain crack at the rear lock screw.

Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000
