U.S.S. Constitution Silver Inlaid Drinking Horn

An impressive 9" cow's horn, with one end open and lined with coin silver to form a receptacle holding approximately 2 ounces of fluid, with a decorative coin silver plaque affixed to the side of the horn engraved F. Varnum U.S. Navy To S.C. Tilley. An 8" suspension chain of white metal is affixed to a ring on the lip of the horn.

F. Varnum undoubtedly refers to Frederick Varnum (1793-1859), a career Navy man. Varnum served as a Midshipman on the U.S.S. Constitution during the War of 1812 seeing action between that ship and the Cyane and Levant. He retired from active duty as a Commander, in September, 1855. We could find no S.C. Tilley with service in the United States Navy.
