U.S. Civil War Artillery Officer's Frock Coat

Chest measures 40", sleeve length 22.5".  Double-breasted dark blue wool broadcloth with dark green polished cotton body lining and ticking lined sleeves.  Mixed hand- and machine-stitching with hand-stitched button holes. Front fitted with three Waterbury, one Steele & Johnson, and eight Horstmann -marked gilt general service buttons. Non-functional cuffs fitted with two Kenyon & Co., two Steele & Johnson, and two Waterbury-marked gilt general service buttons. Bullion-bordered rank insignia sewn on, with additional hardware present for wear of epaulets.

Note from consignor states that the jacket was attributed to a Lieutenant Chester Jones of the "Ohio Artillery," who had purchased the coat prior to his transfer to the west in the hopes that it would be used in the event of his death as a burial uniform. However, as he was killed and buried in the west, it was not able to fulfill the intended purpose.  It further states that the uniform was in the possession of the Bartow History Museum before it de-accession, and that the original purchase included several other items that are not included in this offering.

A search of the United States National Part Service Soldiers and Sailors database does not return any results for a Chester Jones with the rank of Lieutenant. As the uniform shows hardware for officer's dress epaulets while retaining the more informal shoulder straps, it is likely that this jacket was used more often than the note suggests. However, the fact that a junior company officer possessed a double-breasted coat usually reserved for field officers, could lend credence to the theory that this was intended for a more formal occasion such as a professional soldier's burial.  Includes stand.

Good. Fabric retains its deep color with minor pulling stitches present. Some minor moth holes present with a 1.5" hole on bottom of skirt. Numerous button replacement and movements may be indicative of an amateur but well-meaning attempt at restoration.
