Two Slavery Documents and a Letter from South Carolina

ALS, 3pp, Charleston, May 25th 1825. Thomas Brunnell (?) to his son Thomas, in Amherst, MA. A rather philosophical letter extolling the value of the mind in mankind. "Thus a boddy [sic] is essential as a habitation of the mind, & it needs to be kept in health or it becomes a bad house for the mind & weakens or ruins it...A body is not of much value only as it contains a cultivated good mind. We can buy plenty of negro boddies here for three or four hundred dollars a piece that are worth as much as your boddy in any white man that has a poor, good for nothing uncultivated mind in it - it will do as much work as you can. Mind gains strength by using it;..." Folds beginning to separate.

Partially printed Bill of Sale, 8 x 13.25 in., Charleston, State of South Carolina, 4 March 1847. Sale of "One French Slave Named Chloe Warranted Sound" plus "her future assigns and increase." Signed by Tho. W. Mordecai as officer of the court. He was an auctioneer and broker in Charleston. Thomas Whitlock Mordecai was the son of Joseph and grandson of Moses Mordecai of Bonn, Germany. He married Lucretia Cohen in 1834 in Charleston. They had 8 sons and 10 daughters, many of whom died in infancy. He is buried in a large mausoleum in the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery in Charleston (presumably with many others of his family).
