Lot of 2 photograph cases.
Scarce full pressed-paper quarter plate case with mat stamped for early daguerreian John Adams Whipple (American, 1822–1891), active in Boston, MA. Renowned for his technical skills, mastery of photographic equipment, and artistic compositions, Whipple became a respected portrait and architectural photographer. However, he is perhaps best known for his sublime daguerreotypes and subsequent photographic prints of the moon, taken with the assistance of his collaborator, George P. Bond, through the telescope at the Harvard College Observatory in Cambridge, MA.
Sixth plate thermoplastic case of the rare Rebekah at the Well design (K-155). From the book of Genesis (XXXVI: 1-11), case features a scene of Rebekah offering water from her pitcher to Abraham's servant, with camel in background. Original paper label reading, "GENUINE UNION CASE. IMPROVED. Fine Gilt and Burnished Hinge. S. Peck & Co., Manufacturers." Peck's design appears as both obverse and reverse.
