Three Slavery-related Items, 1725-1854

Ship's bill of lading for the ship "Dove," captained by Michael Hodge. Items shipped by Francis Pearce include 20 barrels of sugar and "a negro boy to be sold at Piscetaqua." From St. Johns to Boston. Antigua may 17, 1725. Document is approx. 5 x 9 in., partially printed with elaborate illustrated capital "S" in left margin. The top of the letter seems to be a combination wind and wave, the bottom has a ship under full sail. Margins are a bit scuffed and chipped, especially the right. Overall toning, folds. A few holes at folds with slight paper loss.

1p, 4 x 6.5 in. Sappony, 19 May 1835. "I will see that the negroes ... shall be delivered to you on the day you may appoint for their sale...." Signed Jos. Goodwyn. Addressed to Benjamin Vaughan.

1p, 7.5 x 12.25 in., "On Board Steam Ship Pennsylvania near New-Castle, Delaware, 23 April 1854." To James Thomas, Richmond. "We were hailed a short time ago by the "Virginia" and informed that a dispatch had reached Phila. with the information of the escape of a slave from yr. city, on board this vessel. Capt. Bagmore seemed very much surprised that such could be the case, but immediately ordered a rigid search to be made. Your servant was discovered between deck[s] and will be lodged in jail at New Castle unti the return of this ship, when he will be taken back to you. We are passengers on board and volunteer this letter to assure you of our confidence in the Capt. & his clerk and our belief in his determination to do every thin under such circumstances any Virginian could require." Signed Charles P. Moncure and Geo. Rawlings of Richmond.

Bill of lading with some paper loss, as mentioned above. The letters typical with folds, light toning on outer "panels."
