The Klondyke Nugget, Two S.F. Cody Wild West Show Posters

Lot of 2 lithographed posters, the first, 19.5 x 29.5 in., linen backed, 22 x 33 in. The Klondyke Nugget. Netherfield, Nottingham, and London: Stamford, ca 1898. Poster featuring an illustration based on the likeness of Buffalo Bill, but used here to represent S.F. Cody for his 1890s show.

Second lithographed poster, 19.75 x 29 in., linen backed, 23.5 x 33 in. The Klondyke Nugget. David Allen & Sons Ltd., Belfast, ca 1903. Poster featuring various vignettes promoting actors and scenes from S.F. Cody's stage show.

Although a number of enterprises have used this title (including a newspaper in Alaska), these posters were used by Samuel (Cowdery) Cody's show by this name. Born in Texas, Samuel used Buffalo Bill's image and billed himself as Cody's son, although he was not a relative of the famous performer, until the real Cody's lawyers ordered him to cease and desist.

The show was performed in England beginning in 1898, and was wildly successful there, making Samuel the money he later used to finance his experiments in aviation. Samuel became the first man to fly an aeroplane in Britain in 1908, having by then become a British citizen.
