The Hampton Album issued by the Museum of Modern Art, ca. 1966. A group of 44 photomechanical prints of photographs by Francis Johnston taken at the famous Hampton Institute.
The Hampton Institute was established after the Civil War in 1868. Booker T. Washington graduated from the school and established a similar program with the Tuskegee Institute. Like Tuskegee, Hampton taught Southern African Americans valuable skills and trades in order to gain valuable employment.
