.60" caliber. 41.5" barrel length. SN: NSN. Smoothbore matchlock firearm manufactured in Japan circa 1800 outfitted with front blade and rear notch sights. The red oak stock features a seam running along the underside in line with the barrel. Octagonal barrel secured by three brass bands. Item is lavishly decorated over the entire stock with gold hiramaki lacquer flowers and leaves surrounding brass chrysanthemums. The butt shows a series of brass chrysanthemums interconnected by the lacquer designs. Flourishes include a pair of chrysanthemums surrounding hole through upper tang, and a rampant Shishi (Lion) design to right side. The barrel features an inlaid silver floral design near breech with silver leaves and stems forward of the rear sight.
Condition:
Bore is very dark with oxidation throughout. Jaws of the serpentine have broken but action remains otherwise functional. Gaps show locations where the lacquer flowers have fallen off in four places, two on each side. Details to rampant Shishi design are weak. The cover for the pan is held in place with bound string. A bamboo ramrod with shattered end is installed.
