Lot of 2 CDVs by Vannerson & Jones: Richmond, VA, one of Sydney Smith Lee (1802-1869) and the other of his son, Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905). Both men appear in uniform and have signed their portraits, "S.S. Lee" and "Fitzhugh Lee," respectively. Each carte bears a two-cent revenue stamp on verso.
Son of "Light Horse Harry" Lee and brother of Robert E. Lee, Sydney Smith Lee distinguished himself as a captain in the Confederate States Navy during the Civil War. His military career began in 1820, when he was appointed midshipman in the United States Navy. Along with his brother, "Smith" Lee served during the Mexican-American War and fought at the Battle of Veracruz. After the war, he was promoted to commander accompanied Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan in 1853, commanding his flagship USS Mississippi. After the secession of Virginia, Lee gave up his post and accepted a commission with the Confederacy at Norfolk.
Fitzhugh Lee attended West Point during his uncle’s tenure as superintendent and graduated in 1856. He was assigned to the 2nd Cavalry under Albert Sidney Johnston, where he distinguished himself fighting against the Comanche in Texas. In May 1860, he was appointed instructor of cavalry tactics at West Point but resigned his commission when Virginia seceded. He joined the Confederate army as a lieutenant and was promoted many times over, achieving the rank of brigadier general in July of 1862. Lee fought at many important battles of the Eastern Theater, including Sharpsburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg. After the war, he was elected governor of Virginia and was later appointed consul-general at Havana by President Grover Cleveland. Upon the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, Lee was made major general and given command first of the 7th Army Corps, then the Department of the Missouri, retiring in 1901 as a brigadier general, US Army.
