[STEREOVIEWS] -- [RECONSTRUCTION]. BLESSING, Samuel T. and George MUGNIER, photographers. A group of 16 stereoviews of African American life in Louisiana. New Orleans, LA, [ca 1880s].

7 x 3 7/8 in. stereoviews on cardstock mounts (cabinet-sized, and one regular-sized) (good to excellent condition). Includes 13 with the imprint of George Mugnier (1857-1938) of New Orleans, Louisiana, at his 24 Exchange Alley address (1884-1888). -- and 3 with the applied paper label of Samuel T. Blessing (1830-1897) of No. 87 Canal Street (circa 1880s).

Views include scenes on and around both sugar and cotton plantations, cabins, a school, a group of children on a plantation, a turpentine "tapper," wash day (2), and what appears to be a group of African American boat builders.

Mugnier, born in France, immigrated with his family to New Orleans shortly after the Civil War. Little is known of his early life, but by 1884 he had opened a photographic studio on Exchange Alley. The studio operated at this address for 4 years before closing, presumably because it proved to be a financial failure. Mugnier continued working off and on in the photography business until his death.

Blessing began operating a studio in New Orleans in 1857 and for the next 40 years had studios in the heart of downtown.
