Springfield Model 1863 Type I Rifle Musket

.58 caliber, 40" barrel retained by three clamping barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked U.S. / SPRINGFIELD with a spread-winged eagle and dated 1863 horizontally at the tail. Breech with matching date and standard V / P / {eagle head} proofs on angled flat. Legible ESA cartouche on counterpane. Retains correct 1861 pattern rear sight, front sight/bayonet lug, upper sling swivel and straight shank ramrod. Lower swivel is a replacement.

Very good. Metal lightly cleaned to bright with clear markings. Mechanically functional, fine bore with some dirt in the last few inches near the muzzle. Breech plug tang with some mars from a wrench. Stock sanded leaving edges soft and markings weak, and showing some scattered bumps and dings.
