Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk, Marked A. Stowe

forged iron head with narrow blade and short cylindrical bowl; blade marked A. Stowe and with hallmark B.O.; walnut haft with pewter inlay, overall length 15 in., length of head 6.75 in.
pre-1800

Although Harold Peterson notes the maker A.J. Stowe as probably American, based on a belt axe found in Vermont, the hallmark of B.O. denotes British Ordinance, presenting the possibility of Stowe as an English maker (Peterson 1971:51).
