Souvenir fragment of cable, approx. 0.75 in., wrapped in a brass band inscribed "Souvenir / from U.S.S. Maine," and mounted to a card featuring printed quotations by two men intimately involved with the wreckage of the Maine, certifying its authenticity. The quotation from Joseph G. Venable of the Ordinance Department reads, in part, "I hereby certify that a piece of wire rope this day delivered to Mr. Francis Bannerman was in use as a fore or main stay on U.S.S. Maine, and was with a lot of Anchors, Chains, Ordinance Stores, etc., taken from the wreck of the Maine and delivered by order of War Department at this dock during month of April, 1898...It has been under my daily supervision since then...I identify it as a relic of the Maine."
Card with creasing, soiling, some discoloration, and wear to edges including an approx. 0.75 in. tear to upper left edge.
