Sixth plate daguerreotype.

Well, the subject is not so young. But weå?'re making a supposition that this is a vintage copy daguerreotype of the half plate original in the George Eastman House Collection. That plate is catalog #1915 in the seminal and comprehensive book Young America: The Daguerreotypes of Southworth & Hawes, by Grant B. Romer and Brian Wallis. The catalog says "Painting of an Unknown Man," but looking at this sixth plate, weå?'re not sure itå?'s a painting. The Eastman House half-plate is heavily scratched, so this was made when it was 'new.' Someone suggested itå?'s a portrait of Cornelius Vanderbilt, but we do not endorse that suggestion. Full case.
