Two Confederate newspapers containing coverage and editorial commentary of the passage by Congress of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. The amendment was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, ratified by the required 27 of the then 36 states on 6 December 1865, and proclaimed on December 18. It was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments adopted following the Civil War. This was a momentous event that took place while the Civil War was still raging and that spelled the end of slavery in the South.
