[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Manuscript court document regarding an ownership dispute over enslaved woman named Clarissa. Montgomery County, GA, 9 October 1828.

7 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. manuscript document (toned, separation at crease with repair).

Signed by mark by Kenan Wright, the administrator of the late John Clarke of Laurens County, GA, who brought suit against Johnston McFarland of Montgomery County, GA "for the recovery of a certain Negro woman named Clarissa that belongs to this deponent as the administrator...that the said negro woman is worth the sum of four hundred and fifty dollars and that her hire is worth the sum of fifty dollars per annum and for this that he hath reasons to apprehend that the said negro hath been removed away and will not be forth coming to answer the judgment that shall be rendered in the said case." The case was heard by William Schley (1786-1858), a judge of the Georgia Superior Court and later 36th Governor of Georgia (1835-1837). Verso includes the details of the case noting that "The Sheriff will take good + sufficient bail in the sum of $900." The document is written in a consistent hand and signed "Wm. Schley Judge Supr. Ct." It is unclear if this is Schley's own hand or that of a clerk.
