Each issue 4pp, 17 x 23 in. (disbound, conditions vary, multiple with heavy separation at spine). The issues contain lengthy, serialized essays describing slavery as it existed during the time period prior to the start of the Civil War.

Three consecutive issues dated November 22, 29, and December 6, 1833 (Vol. 8, Nos. 47-49) feature complete serial essays titled, "On the Moral and Religious Condition of Our Colored Population," by Charles Colock Jones. Eight consecutive issues dated January 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, and 21, 1834 (Vol. 9, Nos. 5-12), include the complete, serialized essay, "Negro Slaves."
