[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Anti-Abolition Letter, Worcester, [MA], 5 September 1852.

4pp, 7 1/4 x 9 3/4 in. (creased at folds).

Likely written by a young southern woman while visiting family in Worcester, Massachusetts, the letter includes a scathing review of a church service at which a black man was present and an abolitionist sermon was preached.

"Church is over; I am more provoked than I will allow myself to admit; Strange that these northerners cannot understand what their place in the community is: the services had scarce begun when lo in broad-cloth suit and satin vest and looking finer than the rest; in walked with pride, and consequential air a darkey black as soot, through the middle aisle the sexton led him...he ushered his lordship in with all due reverence to his ebony skin and woolly pate...At first I was at a loss to know what kind of a sermon we were to have, but at length it made itself visible in the form of a scorching free soil discourse almost burning heat, American despotism, the cruel bonds of slavery, the southern states the Hell on earth, the scars and stripes on that young womans [sic] back, the infant cherub torn from its Mothers [sic] breast, the lamentable fact that theirs was not the privelidge [sic] to have a home or know its name, and a thousand other such like expressions, that at once provoked, annoyed, amused and disgusted me. Above all things I do dislike Abolitionism from the pulpit, it is sufficiently trying to my nerves to see that great red flag stretched quite across Main Street bearing the oudacious [sic] firm of Hale & Julian the Free Soil Candidates."

John P. Hale and George Washington Julian were the Free Soil Party candidates for President and Vice President in the 1852 election.
