Lot consists of ten sixth plate daguerreotypes of well-to-do couples in hinged cases. Male subjects are shown wearing typical dark formal clothing with starched white shirts and silk cravats. While most of the men are clean shaven, some have chosen to grow full beards or other facial styles fashionable in the period. Female subjects show much more variation in their choice of dress, with shawls, ribbons, jewelry, and even bonnets making appearances for posterity. Though seated for a formal image, these couples allow a degree of affection with several clasping hands or showing other physical contact, with one lady in particular who appears to be leaning towards her partner.
Some jewelry is highlighted with gold paint along with some light tinting of facial features.
Provenance:Charles A. and Frances Swedlund Collection of Early Photography
