Sixth plate, brown tinted ambrotype of a mustached soldier seated in a studio setting. Housed in full case. The subject wears a short nine button jacket with tall standing square collar, which is early war, but the basic cut of the cloth is decidedly generic as is the vest. The cloth shoulder straps appear to be of a different color, secured by brass buttons. As a counter-balance, the trousers appear much lighter and strongly contrast the jacket which would suggest that the subject is wearing Federal regulation light blue versus a Confederate private who would have appeared overall monotone. Buttons can't be read but the applied gilt makes them appear bigger than they are. It has also been suggested that this is a First Pattern Richmond Depot jacket made with cloth epaulets of a darker, almost bluish tone, or even with a few subtle differences, a blockade-run Irish made Tait jacket of dark cadet grey, either of which would be plausible. Unfortunately the lack of identification or provenance makes it difficult to confirm whether the soldier served with the Union or Confederacy.
Slight loss to emulsion to left of subject's left hand. Otherwise a nice, clear image. Case previously separated at hinge but reinforced with cloth.
