Six Signed Salt Print Portraits of Civil War Soldiers From Harvard College

Lot of 6. Wesley C. Sawyer, Harvard. Includes the page from a Harvard yearbook and a later post-war image. Sawyer enlisted in Oct. 1861 as a Captain in the 23rd MA Vol. Infy. He was severely wounded in March 1862 at New Berne, NC, requiring amputation of his left leg. He was then discharged in November.

James R. Gould was a resident of New York City, according to his tiny signature on the yearbook page. There are two men by this name, both listing NYC as home. One enlisted in the 46th NYVI in Oct. 1861, the other in the US Volunteers Staff as an ADC. Both are reported as either discharged or resigning in 1864.

George Herman Powers was a native of Boston. The lot includes his yearbook page and a later post-war image (likely from a GAR meeting, given the medals on his lapel). He enlisted in August 1864 as Assistant Surgeon and was mustered into F&S of the 60th MA Infy. He mustered out at the end of Nov. 1864.

Ezra Palmer Gould was also a Boston native. Enclosed is his yearbook page and a post-war photograph. He enlisted in Oct. 1861 and was mustered into the 24th MA VI. He was discharged for promotion in Dec. 1863 and commissioned into the 55th MA Infy., the second colored infantry after the more famous 54th. Three months later he was commissioned as Captain of the 59th MA Infy., and the following year (by now, the end of the war), into the 57th MA Infy. He mustered out in late July 1865.

Alfred P. Johnson was also a native of Boston/Cambridge. He mustered into the 44th MA Infy. in September 1862. He mustered out less than a year later in June 1863.

Frank Warren Hackett was a resident of Portsmouth, NH. The lot includes his yearbook page and later photo. He was commissioned into the Navy as Acting Asst. Paymaster in Sept. 1862, and was assigned to the USS Miami. He resigned in Oct. 1864.

Condition:Most of the images are very good. A few with remains of the binding material along the left edge. Later photo of Hackett seems to have some waviness from water.
