Sioux Catlinite Pipe Bowl and File Branded Stem, From the James B. Scoville Collection

T-shaped bowl with tapered anterior projection and a file-branded stem; overall length 25 in., bowl length 6.75 in. x height 3.5 in., stem length 19 in.
fourth quarter 19th century

Purportedly a pipe of Sitting Bull (Hunkpapa Lakota, 1831-1890). Similar to the conversation between James Scoville and Cyril Grace (the original collector), revolving around the pipe of Red Tomahawk, Scoville’s file notes of 1979 state: While he can't verify if it for certain, he did get it from Sitting Bull’s Clan or Band, and he's pretty sure of it. It is supposed to be the one that Sitting Bull 'broke' when he 'broke' with the whites (there is another man claiming to have a broken pipe also - so not certain).

Provenance:

Dr. Cyril W. Grace, South Dakota
James O. Aplan, South Dakota
James B. Scoville, Illinois
