American, late 19th century. An eight-piece silver tea service from the historic Williams family of Buffalo, NY, including a sterling silver presentation pitcher inscribed To Captain Williams Lansing. A Token of Regard from The Members of Company "F" 74th Regt. N.G.N.Y., also marked for Dominick & Haff, STERLING, and dated 1894 on underside. The seven additional silver pieces are inscribed Williams for his mother's family, and include a teapot, creamer, and sugar in matching pattern, two of which with London sterling hallmarks and Victorian duty marks; two handled cups, one teapot with warmer, and one handled tray, all marked W.S. Wood / 367 B.Way on undersides; tray lg. 31, ht. 3, dp. 20.5 in., total weighable silver wt. 76.110ozt (2367g);
Captain Williams Lansing (1860-1920) is perhaps most well known for his role as the supervising architect at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901, where President McKinley was fatally shot. He also served as the commanding officer of Company F, 74th Regiment of the New York National Guard as inscribed on the pitcher, and served as the superintendent of construction for the Connecticut Street Armory in Buffalo, completed in 1900.
