Shortened Winchester 1873 Rifle with Decorated Native American Style Beaded Scabbard

.38-40, 18" octagonal barrel with tubular magazine, S/N obscured by pitting and rawhide wrap. Blued finish, smooth straight-gripped stock with crescent buttplate without butt trap and smooth forend. Standard two-line Winchester barrel markings, weak Model 1873 marking on tang, 38-40 caliber marking on barrel near receiver, no legible serial number. Barrel shortened to 18", magazine tube shortened as well. Replaced rear sight and front sight. Rawhide wrapped around triggerguard tang and butt with added tacks. Rifle is accompanied by a Native American style leather scabbard with a printed calico lining and seed beaded decorations.

Condition:

Good. Retains traces of blue with a smoky blue gray patina and scattered surface oxidation. Shortening is somewhat crudely done. Markings partially legible, mechanically functional, fair bore is heavily oxidized and pitted. Added rawhide is worn and tacks have a rich ocher patina. Stock with wear and scattered bumps and dings. Forend with significant wear. Scabbard with moderate wear as well. The authenticity of Native American used and decorated weapons can be extremely difficult to ascertain and no guarantee of such authenticity is provided.
