Scarce Civil War Tintype of Soldier Wearing The Barrel,

an outdoor view of a bevy of tinted enlisted men gathered around an unfortunate private, humiliated and sentenced to "wearing the barrel" for some misdemeanor infraction, perhaps drinking on duty. A form of punishment often referred to in Civil War letters but rarely photographed.

Condition:Tintype is without case showing numerous dents and BB-sized dings with emulsion rub at top, about G. The plate is somewhat dark with weak clarity.
