Sam Brown Belt with Powder Horn
Powder horn with printed designs attached to an unmarked Sam Brown style belt. Horn is 11.5" inches long with 2.75" diameter plug. Design to horn reads "STOCKBRIDGE 1811" in banner surrounding the stylized initials "R R". Plug is held fast with nails and horn and a string hanger tied to end and around loop in plug. Scrimshaw design is weak with horn showing a smooth finish overall. Horn has a smooth texture without ridges.
This lot was obtained by the consignor directly from Major David McKelvy Peterson's step-mother Elanor S. Peterson, for whom he worked mowing the lawn and doing other household jobs. Aware of his interest in aviation and military history, Mrs. Peterson chose him to be the caretaker of this archive in 1963. Other items in this sale from the Peterson Archive are lots 1167 and 1175.
Condition:
Good. Plug has a crack in two sides and horn has chipped around plug connection. Horn shows some scratches overall. Sam Brown belt shows wastage along edges with some cracking and scratches. Buckles and loops are tarnished and show some spots of rust.
