Lee, Robert E. (1807-1870). ALS, "R.E. Lee, " 1p, 7.5 x 8.5 in. (sight), matted and framed to 28.5 x 15 in. "Hd. Qs. Army of Norther Va." January 10, 1864. Addressed to Mississippi soldiers and dictated by Lee to Walter Taylor, his aide. Letter conveys a formal expression of appreciation to the officers and privates of Mississippi for their wartime sacrifices, reading, "Special Orders / Soldiers of Mississippi! It is with great gratification that the Commanding General announces to you the joint resolutions of thanks passed by the Legislature of your state. It is a just tribute to that conduct which in every campaign and on every battle field of the Army of Northern Virginia has won for you his highest ordination. He remains with you, your gallant leaders, and brave comrades who have fallen. May you cherish their memories and emulate their deeds. From her wasted fields and deserted houses, Mississippi calls upon you to vindicate her honor and achieve her independence."
Framed with a photograph of Lee, 6 x 9 in. (sight), printed after the Brady photograph taken in Richmond on April 16, 1865, one week after his surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Lee appears in the uniform he wore at the time of surrender, with a hat in his right hand, standing before a wooden door on the back porch of his Franklin Street Residence.
Condition:
Not examined outside of frame. Letter with toning/discoloration, and significant areas of fading, including Lee's signature, which appears very faintly at lower right.
