Richard Varick (1753-1831). Revolutionary War veteran who served as George Washington's aide-de-camp and private secretary, Mayor of New York City (1789-1801). Partially printed DS, "Rich. Varick," 1p, 7.75 x 12.5 in., "City of New-York." March 1, 1792. Manuscript Document of Bond, 2pp, 7.75 x 12.5 in., Middlesex County, Virginia. February 10, 1805. Concerns the financial obligations of Elizabeth Robinson Steptoe (ca 1768-1832) and her oldest son, Thomas Steptoe (1783-?), to Sheriff Philip Ludwell Grymes (1746-1805), who was Elizabeth's son-in-law. The estate of Elizabeth's husband, William Steptoe, was committed to Grymes as administrator in order to discharge Steptoe's numerous debts and maintain the Steptoe plantation. Grymes died in May 1805, and Elizabeth Steptoe regained custody of her younger children that October. Her husband's debts continued to plague her until her death in 1832.
