Rare Springfield M1860 Staff and Field Officer's Sword Used by Colonel Thomas H. Ruger as West Point Superintendent,

31" double-edged blade etched with military motifs. Marked at ricasso in an etched panel U.S. Armory Springfield, Mass. and then the inspector's initials G.G.S. First type Staff and Field Officer's sword made at Springfield. (See Kellersteadt, 1998: 25). Shagreen and brass wire wrapped handle. Brass pommel and knuckle bow with folding guard and chased military motifs. Two scabbards: one is browned; the other is nickeled. Original chamois leather carrying case with extra scabbard. General Thomas H. Ruger would have acquired this sword while he was Superintendent of West Point from 1872-1876.
