Rare Nez Perce War Letter from Fort Lapwai, 1872

 2pp, dated Fort Lapwai, I. Ty. [Idaho Territory], addressed to Major Jackson, no signature.

"My dear Sir,

"I_____from G___ Sully that some of the settlers in the last fight say that James Ruben(?) was in the last fight and with the band of the Hostiles. This I am sure is false and is likely to bring more troble [sic] on our heads if he is killed by any of the citizens as they report they will do if found in our [camp].

"Please take him under your especial care untill you join the General, and then inform him of the threats of the citizens.

"He should not be allowed to go about the camp of the citizens as they may kill him and then we would have an other fight on our hands from the treaty Indians...."

According to docket on verso, James is an army scout. The Nez Perce War was fought primarily from June to October 1877.

Very difficult to read. Folds as expected.
