Rare CDV of Confederate Brig. Gen. James Simons

Carte published by E. Anthony ca 1861. Penciled on verso Genl Simons - Said to be the handsomest man in South Carolina.

James Simons was South Carolina's Speaker of the House, a longtime politician who also held a brigadier general's commission in the state militia when war commenced. Simons commanded Morris Island during the bombardment of Ft. Sumter but soon fought with Gov. Pickens over the prerogatives of rank--Simmons disliked having to take orders from his arch-political rival--and resigned his commission on July 10, 1861 taking no real part in the war after that.

Condition:Soiling and edge/corner wear.  Trimmed across top edge.
