Rare Boston "Fishing Lady" School Sampler
American (Boston), 18th century. A needlepoint, finely stitched with wool threads, depicting a reclining shepherdess and her suitor with birds and a dog in a landscape with rolling hills. Written on verso of frame Wrought by Mary Eliot and other indistinct text. Housed in a painted frame. Frame retains old museum loan label; 12.5 x 13.5 in. (sight).
This sampler is related to a group of embroideries known as the "Boston fishing lady pictures." These embroideries share a number of characteristic motifs, such as a fishing lady and a reclining shepherdess, strolling couples, a piping shepherd, animals and trees set against a landscape of rolling hills. The "Boston fishing lady pictures" were first identified by Helen Bowen in her article "The Fishing Lady and Boston Common" published in the magazine Antiques in 1923.
