American, Late 19th Century
Chest of Drawers
Height 79 x width 29 x depth 18 3/4 inches.
The chest of drawers (along with lot 4 and lot 6 in this sale) was purchased by the consignor's great grandparents from R.J. Horner in New York City in the early 1890s. The suite was purchased for the family's country house in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. (See attached photos of the suite in situ at the Lake Geneva home). After the Lake Geneva estate was sold in 1959, the consignor's parents used the suite in their Chicago home on State Street.
Provenance:Property from the Collection of Kellogg Fairbank
In overall decent, stable, attractive condition. Old scuffs, marks and scratches throughout consistent with age and use. Some slightly heavier wear and sun fading to top of case also consistent with age and use. Some minor splits to veneer on drawers, few corners with very small flaking and losses to veneer of drawers. Galleries on side of mirror base each lacking one baluster element. Galleries lift from top of case and are not firmly secured to top. Gallery on cornice with one finial detached but retained, other side with a break between side ornament and cornice gallery. Apparently lacking key to lock drawers in place.
