R. & C. Leonard Contract U.S. Model 1808 Flintlock Musket

.69 caliber, 44.75" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Flat beveled flint lock with integral fenced iron pan and flat beveled reinforced cock marked with an {eagle} / US under the pan, over the contract name R. & C. LEONARD, and marked vertically in two lines at the tail CANTON in an arc and 1811. Breech marked US over a depressed cartouche with a raised eagle's head (facing right) over CT and with a V inspection. According to Moller, the "CT" stands for "contract" and is only found on 1808 and 1812 contract muskets. Counterpane stamped with a legible V / BM inspection, the mark of inspector Benjamin Moor.  Lock remains in original flint configuration as does the barrel, although the touchhole is enlarged and shows moderate erosion. A socket bayonet lug is present under the barrel, 1.3" from the muzzle. Retains both sling swivels and an original full-length ramrod. Rudolph Charles Leonard of Canton, MA received a contract to produce 5,000 "Harpers Ferry" pattern muskets in October of 1808, and delivered a total of 3,867 between 1810 and 1814, with 1,125 being delivered during 1811. A scarce and untouched example of a War of 1812 period US M1808 contract musket in original flint.

Condition:

Good. Untouched with a thickly oxidized brown patina on the metal parts. Metal shows some scattered roughness and surface crust, but remains mostly smooth with most of the real pitting confined to the breech area. Markings remain mostly clear and legible, lock functional, bore heavily oxidized, very dark and dirty with scattered pitting. Stock remains fairly crisp, but shows wear and damage with wood loss around the tail of the lock, a crack above the lock, wood loss behind the tang and a crack on the off side of the tang. The tang screw is broken off inside the gun, leaving the tang proud of the wood. Stock shows scattered bumps and bruises but does not appear to have been sanded or cleaned.
