Quarter Plate Tintype of Corporal Henry L. Tibbetts, 5th Maine Infantry

Quarter plate tintype portrait of Corporal Henry Tibbetts (ca. 1835-1864?) of Wellington, ME, wearing a coat and cap with company insignia. Beneath a rather full goatee, his mouth appears open in wide "O," perhaps caught in the midst of speaking or stifling a yawn. Tibbetts enlisted as a corporal on June 24, 1861 and mustered into Company E, 5th Maine Infantry. His regiment left for Washington, D.C. two days later. After seeing action that July at the Battle of Bull Run, Tibbetts was promptly discharged on September 10, 1861,
