Quarter Plate Ambrotype of Confederate Pards from the Crescent Regiment, New Orleans, Incl. William H. Meeker, KIA Shiloh

Lot of 2. Quarter plate ambrotype representing two privates of Company A, known as the Crescent City Guards, of the Crescent Regiment, later numbered as the 24th Louisiana Infantry. Accompanied by crescent insignia, approx. .375 x .5 in.

The authoritative Portraits of Conflict series, Louisiana volume, by Carl Moneyhon and Bobby Roberts, identifies the subjects as William H. Meeker and friend (p. 89). On March 5, 1862, Private Meeker enrolled for 90 days' service into Company A, Crescent Regiment. He was reportedly shot in the temple and killed in action at Shiloh on April 6, 1862. This image likely dates to Meeker's antebellum or early war volunteer militia association based on the style of uniform worn by both subjects. The soldier seated on the right is wearing an oval "CS" belt plate (in reverse). This style of plate is universal in Confederate service but somewhat rare in period photography concentrated early in the war, before the plate became common. Diagonal crack in plate. Housed in full, pressed paper case.

The Crescent Regiment was formed in May 1861 for Confederate service composed of former New Orleans militiamen. The regiment saw its first action at Shiloh where it lost 23 killed, 84 wounded, and 20 missing. The Crescent Regiment served in the Trans-Mississippi Department for the duration, active in Western Louisiana and the operations against Banks' during the successful Red River Campaign before disbanding in the spring of 1865.
